APDM Opal data analysis
The APDM Opal is the gold-standard precision IMU-based motion platform for CNS and movement-disorder research. We've spent years on the statistical analysis of Opal-derived endpoints in a clinical-trial context, not just academic use, and know where the data-quality edge cases live.
The technology: body-worn inertial measurement units (IMUs) combining a tri-axial accelerometer, gyroscope, and magnetometer, sampling movement at high frequency.
Endpoints
Opal-derived endpoints we analyze
| Family | Measures |
|---|---|
| Gait | gait speed, cadence, stride length, gait asymmetry, double-support time, turning |
| Postural sway | quiet stance, AP/ML sway, sway area, sway velocity (eyes open/closed) |
| Functional tests | instrumented TUG (iTUG), sit-to-stand, 2-minute & 6-minute walk tests (2MWT / 6MWT) |
| Daily-life monitoring | actigraphy, ambulatory gait, activity over multi-day wear |
| Movement-disorder | tremor, bradykinesia (where collected) |
What we do with it
From Opal data to defensible endpoints
- Data cleaning & QC of Opal-derived endpoint exports; artifact handling and valid-trial criteria
- Derivation of digital gait, sway, and turning metrics
- MMRM / mixed-effects analysis across visits and conditions
- Reliability (ICC, MDC) and MCID framing so a change is real and meaningful
- Manuscript-ready tables, figures, and methods — peer-reviewed in JACC and Movement Disorders
Pairs with SAP development and our broader services.
