Garmin & Fitrockr data analysis for research
Consumer Garmin devices generate research-grade signal, but only if you can get clean data out of the ecosystem and process it correctly. We own the full analytical protocol end to end, from raw BBI through MMRM primary analysis to publication-ready manuscripts.
The technology: wrist-worn optical photoplethysmography (PPG) for heart rate, HRV and RMSSD, plus tri-axial accelerometry for activity, exported through Fitrockr and the Garmin Connect and Health APIs.
Data ecosystem
Fluent in the Garmin research stack
Fitrockr, Garmin Connect, and Garmin Health exports each expose the data differently. We work directly with these sources, including the optical PPG signal and raw beat-to-beat interval (BBI) data for HRV/RMSSD derivation, and handle the export, alignment, and artifact issues that trip up generic data-science approaches.
Endpoints
Garmin-derived endpoints we analyze
| Family | Measures |
|---|---|
| Activity | daily step count, active minutes, MVPA, energy expenditure |
| Cardiac / autonomic | resting heart rate, HRV and RMSSD derived from optical PPG and raw beat-to-beat intervals (BBI) |
| Respiratory / oxygenation | SpO2 / pulse oximetry, respiratory rate (where available) |
| Sleep | sleep duration, efficiency, and stages |
| Compliance | wear-time, valid-day yield, and compliance trajectories over the monitoring period |
Wear-time and compliance are usually the deciding factor. See wearable SAP development and the actigraphy / activity methodology.
